Pico del Teide
Tenerife is a volcanic island. It emerged
from the middle of the Atlantic Ocean more than 14 millions years
ago. Even from far, you can immediately guess its volcanic origin
by admiring its cone-shaped volcano, Mount Teide, situated right
in the centre of the island. The Teide is 3718 meters (12198 ft)
high above the sea level and this makes it the highest mountain
in the whole Spain!
In 1954 the Spanish government declared the area National Park. Nowadays this area is the most visited Tenerife attraction. Indeed, Teide National Park is definitely impressive and worth a visit during your holidays.

Tenerife & Teide in Winter: The National park is situated at more than 2,000 meters above the sea level and the Mount Teide reaches almost 4,000 meters. Thus, even if Tenerife is near the Tropic, it is instead quite normal that during winter you will see snowing in the park
-
Tenerife & Teide in Summer: In summer the Teide National Park takes another surreal appearance. At the base of Teide in fact you will find yourself in a unique and seemingly inhospitable habitat where temperatures can reach sometimes even 40 Degrees Celsius. Here, you will see a multitude of unique prehistoric plants.

Cable car up to Teide summit: At the base of Teide you will find a cable car, which in 10 minutes will take you another 1,2 km higher. When you will get out of the cable car in fact you will be less than 200 meters from the top of the Teide. If you want to continue to the summit however will need to hike using one of the 3 different trails. Keep in mind though that some trails are ONLY ALLOWED to those who have obtained in advance a permit from the Office of the Teide National Park in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (check below for telephone contact information). Such permits are valid ONLY for certain dates. These restrictions are essential to limit the erosion and disturbance that tourists would cause by going to the summit (keep in mind that the Teide National Park hosts around 2.7 millions visitors each year).
The cable car works from 9:00am to 16:00pm and it stops if weather or wind conditions are not good.
In the Teide National Park exists only one hotel "the Parador de Las Cañadas" which is a 4 star government-owned hotel and one "Refugio" at 3250 meters above the sea level, el "Refugio de Altavista". Light refreshments are available in these 2 locations as well at the base of the cable car. No gas stations or shops are located in the park. So, remember to plan your trip accordingly.
